Removing built-up paint from "stamps".

Previous owners of this house had some beach-themed bathroom and used some sort of paint stamp to put these little shell shapes everywhere. Can these be sanded down before I repaint? I'm thinking circular sander. I don't really want to get into filling the voids, skim coats etc., or replacing drywall at this point. If I can make it better I will, if not I'll just paint over it.

Thanks.

Sanding, sure, but not an orbital. It's just too aggressive and may cause more damage. I would use a 1/4 sheet sander with about 150 grit if you want to go that route. Or, if you have a multi-tool with a triangular sanding head that would work too. It may be easier to control and won't scour such a large area. Test yourself first on an inconspicuous area to see how it's going to go.

Well that is good because I have a multitool but not an orbital sander. I will have to pick up one of those heads for it.

I will have to pick up one of those triangular heads for it. I have to a good bit of drywall repair in there for nail pops and a couple other things. I don't want to tear out drywall, because if I tear it out, I'm tearing out from the floor to the ceiling and doing the whole thing over. "Good enough for a rental" I keep telling myself.

Dave, after seeing your pic, an orbital may work. I didn't realize the "stamp" was so large. It just takes some finesse to use the orbital to remove high spots like that. You may have to experiment with proper grit to see how aggressively it removes the stamp. I agree, it would be waaaaayyyyy too much work to skim them over although that could be an option if sanding doesn't do the trick.

Trade my bath for yours. When my wife bought the ceiling paint, she said that Ace Hardware had added a additive for Mildew resistance. Now I am hating the Ace brand paint, because it is bubbling all over the ceiling.

I have to take down the towel bars, cover the tub, sink & toilet and scrape all that crap paint off. Now of course the Valspar we used on the walls, it is solid and no bubbling what so ever.

Luckily it is in the plans to repaint it this Winter, along with the Bedroom, come December as our Winter project.

Dave, you need to just tell the wife that you are going to brew beer at the new place, after all of this. When it comes time to move, invite family and friends over for a house warming party, but do not tell them that they are there to move the stuff from the old house to the new, while you, the wife and kids go off on a weekend getaway.

The only time I've used gloss white on a ceiling is in a garage for light reflection. Otherwise I try to use flat ceiling paint. Don't know if that's right or not; just what I do.

Greg, it's going to be tough to recruit volunteers to help me move, I'm going to HAVE to trick them! I have a detached 28x48 garage that's full of stuff. I'm doing my best to get rid of what I can before we move.

Find out if they are doing any collections for the recent Tornado victims. They are having a drive this Sat. in my town, so I am doing a big purge Friday night, to drop off a bunch of coats and shoes, along with bedding and glassware.

I am finding that Habitat is getting really picky with taking donations anymore. Tried to get them to take a sink from the neighbor's, that was from her bath, that had been sitting outside for a week. They would not even take it. Ended up just having my son bust it up in the garbage dumpster, so that we could dispose of it.
