Removing black outlines off walls
Does anyone know what causes item outlines on walls? We are trying to paint over them with a new color, but they are still there. Anyone knwo where they come from or how to get rid of them? We have tried everything we can think of.

I am only guessing that you are speaking of the outlines that form around wall hangings and pictures on walls. This generally will form in houses and areas with smokers. The tar forms a sticky residue that other dirt is attracted to. Clean the surface with a basic surface cleaner then seal it with something like kilnz. It should then be able to be repainted over without any problems.

Oh now that you already have paint over them cleaning is not really a factor. Get a sealer type primer if that fails then you can always try shellac it seem to block anything

we are non smokers so that can't be it. It didn't happen on any of our pictures that were hung up, just the back of the TV and from the items we had on our shelves and from our desks. I am just stumped...guess i can primer over it before i paint any more..but still open to other suggestions.

I did a search on you problem and found what is being called ghosting.
Here is a article I found on it.

I have seen dirty walls and stained areas behind tvs. The electrical appliance use does attract a lot of dirt that other wise would not be collected. Just think of what you screen attracts. Maybe this is what happened in your situation.
