refinishing wood door

My front door is mahogany with cut glass. The outside needs to be refinished, but the inside looks fine. Can I just refinish the exterior of the door? Do I have to take it off the hinges to do that? I would like to avoid that, as it is a very large double door.

No...but depending on what you are doing, and what type of hinges, it may be more desirable
