We recently bought a 100+yr old plus home that has been completely redone beautifully except for the fireplaces. Mantles and hearths are fine, but inside of all three fireplaces have just been painted white. All fireplaces are non working but I am considering adding gas logs. Would like to re-do the inside bricks, outside is marble so that is not a problem. Any suggestions and do I need to be concerned about what paint is already there?
all paint is flammable. do not let any fire get near paint or it will catch on fire/bubble off/emit gasses/etc. have you seen what happens to the paint inside of as charcoal BBQ after a couple burgers? it is gone- into your burger. electric logs with cheesey mirror effect flames, or srtip the paint off. Or brick over the paint. it was probably painted white thinking it would never get used again, otherwise it would have been painted flat black oil.
