Re-painting the front patio - no strip or not to strip...

Hello fellas.

Well, the time has come to repaint the front patio. This is our problem...

The patio is concrete and looks to have several coats of paint on it from the previous owner(s).

I've attached a photo so you can see what I am talking about. As you can see it is chipping.

We pretty much want to go with a whole new color on this.

Therefore, I pose my question... Do we fill in the cracks and chips and then paint over the already 4-5 layer thick parint that already exists or do we try to strip the paint ourselves and start from scratch?

Thanks in advance.

Hate to be the one to say it but the only way to do it right would be to get back to the original finish.

it all depends on what you want your finished product to look like.

you can scrape, sand, spot prime and paint to get a uniform color and sheen that looks good from the street or spend the money and time to strip it.

Personally i think that any product you put on there is only going to last 3 to 5 years anyway so why strip it and spend all that money and time. Prep and paint it.

If you decide to strip it and find that the surface is in pretty good condition you might want to consider staining the concrete instead of painting it. Might last longer than another coat of paint. If you're set on paint I say prep it, paint it, and be done with it... but I hate stripping paint.
