Question

random roll textured ceiling????/

New kitchen remodel, and contractor used this method on our ceiling. He is trying to tell us this "random roll" is what it is. (it looks like crap) Yes, we knew it was to be a texure, but there are lines, lumps, peaks, there is absolutle no consistency. It looks like my 4yr old did it.
Has anyone ever heard of this method, and if so, is it soposed to be this unconsistent??? and what ever happend to the customer is always right attitude. Im paying him.
Thank you to anyone with advise on this.

Sounds like he clearly does may not know what he is doing in his attempt at random-roll texturing.

That type of texture was popular in the 80's, tho, we don't get much call for it now. In New England; we mostly do sand-swirls (fancier), skip-trowel (cathedral ceilings), or simply flat. Personally, I think random roll looks cheap.

As stated, if it looks as bad as you say, then he must not have a clue.

The house I live in now, someone attemped the same thing on a few of the ceilings in certain rooms...It was so bad that we I just overlayed the ceilings with 3/8" Sheetrock. It almost sounds like that is what you are looking at.

Key to randome roll is: Adding white latex paint, and water, to thin out the mixture. It goes on very, very thinly. It shuld have the consistency of pancake batter. It is true random patterned, with virtually no "peaks" of the compound. The pattern and thickness is very, very sutble, barely noticable.
I have it on the cathedral ceiling in my current bedroom...I just went and checked it. I can tell that it was professionally done by someone that knew what they were doing. Don't know what your's truly looks like, but it doesn't sound right at all.

All I can say is: If you can't convince the guy, call a drywall contractor in and ask him for his opinion of the ceiling (when the otehr guy isn't around), and a price to fix it....
.....armed with that, go tell Mr. Random-swirl what was said.
Most Serious Drywall Contractor's take a huge amount of pride and their own work, and can really bluntly,"tell it ....like it is", when looking at bad work.
They'll tell you what yours really looks like....

Good Luck!

Thank you so much for all this info and advice. It is likely this is going to take a lot of my time, and what little patience I have left, to fix this whole kitchen problem.
Thanks again,
CAKE

Wow, what a difference, Im thinking I will need to find someone to come in and fix everything that was done, including the drywall job. These pictures are great.

If you are in my N.E. region and need someone to evaluate the overall work (no cost - since you're a DIY Chatroom member), PM me.

We are based in Northern, MA., about 30 min above Boston. If that is in your region (1 - 1.5 hours)...
Try sending me info as a "message", rather than a PM. That should work.
