Protective finish over antique faux finish.

I am re-finishing an old dresser for my wife and she wants an antique finish. I have applied the base coat of Valspar satin ultra white and will be applying a Minwax dark walnut stain after the paint has dried then I will wipe it all down. My question is do I use a poly finish or I have some Valspar clear protector which is an acrylic resin. I don't know whether the acrylic will bond to the oil based stain or not and I'm leaning away from poly in fear that it will yellow. Any suggestions?

Maybe i'm missing something, but how are you staining over a paint? stain is meant to go on bare wood. I'd be more worried about adhesion there.

Either clear finish should bond to stain fine, but i believe an oil is preferred.

Danny, you're antiquing the piece, why are you concerned that oil will yellow? That's what you want, as it will make the piece look older when it yellows. ARC, he's ony wiping the surface with the stain which will leave if it in the crevices, corners and dings to give the appearance of age. A typical antique technique.
