Product to go over drywall that is not smooth

I just took down paneling in a room and, behind it is in drywall. There are black glue marks along with nail holes and other imperfections. Other than that, the drywall is in good shape. I know there is a product out there that I can use that would cover all these imperfections but I don't know where to begin to look. Help? Thoughts? Brands recommended? Thanks.

Joint compound. Just thin it down a bit, trowel or roll it on, smooth it with an 8 - 12 inch drywall knife, let dry, lightly sand and repeat the process until you cover all imperfections & get your walls smooth again. Of course it helps to get as much glue, etc off the walls first so you don't have to apply more than 2 coats of joint compound.

I was thinking of some sort of paint product that is very rough - like a stucco or popcorn type....does that make sense?

CGreene, sure, there are many textured paint products on the market from every major paint co. that you just roll on like regular paint. You can still go the joint compound route & stucco it in any type of design you want.
