priming & painting T&G porch boards
Hello,
I'm in need of some reassurance / suggestions regarding my porch board replacement project. I am using T&G 5/4x4 Fir boards. I have already dipped them all in Wolman's Wood Life Classic. I headed off to my local SW store in search of an appropriate primer today and was given the recommendation of Armorseal Tread-Plex as the primer and top coat. Nowhere in the specs do I find it referred to as self priming. I do find a section that calls for new wood to be primed with recommended primer before painting. Then under the Recommened Systems category it has 2 coats of Tread-Plex as a valid system for wood floors. I'm confused and dont want to screw this up. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

Hello....You didn't say what part of the country you are from. So this is the best answer I can give you...Prime with a good exterior wood primer, and then for a professional finish , use 2 coats of exterior finish paint of your choosing in the color and sheen you like. Hope this has helped you.

Regular exterior paint will not cut it as a floor finish paint

Chrisn, good catch....my fingers goes faster than my brain,... could have sworn I put deck or porch in there between exterior finish. Like I said good save. Thank you much.

Hi guys,
Thanks for your reply's. I'm still curious about the Tread-Plex being considered self priming. My local SW rep is supposed to give me a call tomorrow. I'll forward on any information that I receive. |

Nothing is self-priming except primer. There are some situations where primer isn't needed, but for the most part, primer is primer and paint is paint.
