Preping walls for paininting!

I have just bought house 60-70 years old, we have stripped the walls of vinyl wallpaper that was very toughing to get off but now are now left with rough walls. What is the best way to smooth the walls?

Post a picture.
#1 All the old glue have to go first, left one the paint does not have a chance.
The walls just may need a sanding cleaning and a skim coat of drywall mud to get them smooth again.
But without a picture no one knows just how bad there are.

The walls are just mainly covered in glue left over from the wallpaper. We were told we needed an orbital sandier to make it smooth again but they are costly to buy. we have a hand sandier we used for the floors can we use this? Sorry if my questions are really silly... I have pictures but not of the full walls il get some to put up

You can get the paste wet ( use a sponge or even a garden bug sprayer-) let it soak in and soften the paste- scrape the paste off with a 6" mud blade ( and a 4 to clean that off the 6) - then sponge any residue left.
Lightly sand to get any bits off- and then prime with a clear primer called Gardz.
then do any repair needed- prime repair and paint.

It's just that easy!! lol

A sander would just grind the glue into the wall.
The glue needs to be stripped.

When the paste is that thick it needs to be bladed off, I use my mud pan and do some "reverse spackling".

I stand corrected,but, he did say paste 42 times, adhesive once and the dreaded glue only twice
