popcorn ceiling (resurfacing)

Hello all,

We recently purchased a house and wife surprised me with a honey-do list of removing the popcorn ceiling. Well, so far, Ive scraped one room, it came down like it was expected. The other rooms, its a battle between getting the popcorn and scraping the drywall.

Since we dont have a smooth surface, we decided to use spackling paste and just create a smooth surface. Is this the right material? Its a slow and long process of spackling and sanding. And repeating.

No, it isn't.
After getting the popcorn off, if it is real dusty I will give it a coat of Gardz, then use maybe 2 full skim coats (depending whats left) of a premixed like Plus 3. Sands pretty easy.
Prime, check over and spot mud as needed, reprime those and paint.
The other thing most DIY don't get us use a wide blade. Most of it should be done with a 12" blade. Thin the bucket just a little bit , but it should be like real thick pancake batter.

Spot mud with the "Plus 3"? I do have the wide blade. I think its about 12" I have a trowel?, that I can put the mixture into and work on to the blade to apply to the ceiling.

Whats the difference between what Im using and the "Plus 3" product?

This seems to be a good place for a new thread explaining the difference between spackle and joint compound or other products that will even out a surface.

I'll start the thread. Need the pro's to follow in with all the BEST answers. I have some but not always the best.
