i would like to paint my ceiling. the house is from the 70's. the ceiling is rough, they call it a popcorn ceiling. i have seen them repainted by rolling but the paint seemed to fill in and create a blob look (maybe to much paint or wrong roller?). the popcorn roughness goes right up the the edge of the wall so i can't see how to get a straight edge with the wall or if painting a wall not getting it on the popcorn.. i also heard if you get it to wet it could fall off ?? should it be sprayed, rolled, what do you do and how do you do it.... i really appreciate any help on this one.... thanks
If it has been painted since the 70's, there is little chance of it falling off during a rolling re-paint
(unless there are some other major issues at work like a wet attic or something)
It's possible I suppose, but not likely
The rollers pulling off major popcorn is mostly ceilings that were never painted, and the paint wets the popcorn and can release it
You should be able to roll it with a quality ceiling paint and a premium thick nap roller sleeve
It's tough to get a straight edge but a careful hand and a quality brush is the best way
Sometimes, it's there's really no way to "cut a line" for the texture, you have to "bring the ceiling down" by painting 1/8th of an inch of ceiling white onto the wall, or with some it looks better to bring the wall up into the ceiling a bit
Scrape it all off, sand it smooth, prime then paint.
That's what I did and it looks much better.
