Pine lined ceiling

I have a pine lined ceiling in my home and want to lime or paint it. I believe it could be varnished. Any special treatment needed? What type of paint should I use? thanks

If it is now varnished, stained, poly'd, or shellacked, you'll need to prime before painting
Actual knowledge of what the finish is now may narrow the type of primer suggestion down a bit, but basically it will be a solvent-based primer, either alkyd (oil) or alcohol (shellac) based

If it's actually varnish, or unknown, or real dark, I'd suggest the shellac
