Picking a color to match my shingles?
I never imagined it would be this tough. I have new sandstone shingles. I asked at every paint store in town..."what color scheme will match with my shingle color?"
I always am told I need to look through a TON of color samples and figure it out for myself.
I was always thinking that there has to be a way of narrowing it down a bit with a color wheel of some sort.
I wanted to go with a darker brown and off white trim... and maybe you just have to take a chance and guess...
but I figured in this day and age we should be able to narrow it down a bit.
Also, what is the most common type of paint you'd throw on the exterior of a home...I mean the more gloss the better or less gloss? Its latex
Well, you still have to look for it and decide, but use a fan deck like you would a color wheel:
As for sheen there's no rules per say
Out here, a low lustre (or even a flattish solid stain) is probably most common on the body, with soft-/semi- gloss for trim
We don't see flat really, except for solid stains and some specialty paints (like exterior Aura) due to the fact that we are in the ocean and flats can mold up quickly in this environment
But there is no rule so to speak
I ended up getting the wrong color and paying for 3 wrong colors of paint. Eventually I mixed the colors I had and came up with the color I wanted...Got the store to match it and its good to go!
