painting wood trim

We have stained trim and I want to paint it white. I would like a smooth finish and would like to know what type of paint to use.

Welcome to the forum Vicki. I would give the trim a light sanding with 150 or 180 grit paper. Dust if off well and then use an oil base bonding primer or Zinsser BIN. Chrisn's suggestion of Fresh Start will work as well, just preference. I agree with the finish choice.

Both reply's are good but if your are working with oak be prepared for the grain of the wood to show. If you use Benjamin Moore Fresh Start alkyd enamel underbody white for a primer it will help hide the grain of the wood. the can number is 21700 any bm dealer will know what you are talking about. remember the the surface should always be clean dull and dry and nothing replaces a primer. good luck and always have fun.
