painting wood fiber ceiling tile

I am painting kitchen and need a sealer primer for the ceiling. The ceiling is make of 12inch square wood fiber(I think). The ceiling was done in 1977. I am planning on using Bullseye 1-2-3 latex not oil based. I would use oil but being the kitchen I am concerned about any smell. Any problem using the latex over the oil. Some people say the oil is the way to go. The only stains on the ceiling are around the air ducts and I will clean that up before I start.

My only concern, and may be unfounded, is the water in the latex swelling the tiles. I'm pretty certain I know what tiles you're talking about. Personally, it being a kitchen with grease, food stains, and the stains you already are aware of, I would use the oil. You can buy low odor oil primers. And any latex finish you put over that will be fine.

Gotta agree with Joe on this one. If you use a water-based primer on those type of tiles it wicks tannins from the tiles and stains the tiles and seams a brownish color. I've tried to shortcut it with a high quality latex primer and each time I have done it, I regret it. Might want to try Zinsser's Cover Stain or, at the very least, KILZ........which does come in an odorless version.

If they are what I think they are, you could probably replace them for the cost of good quality paint.

That's a good point gymschu, didn't think of that. But, now that you mention it, I remember once or twice, the water staining on those ceilings were particularly nasty. Any kind of fiberous substrate like those I always go with oil.
