A faux painter, artist might be able to help.Ask for a name at your local paint store.

You might strip the paint off a small corner of one to see what wood is underneath. Maybe you will be lucky and find that someone forgot to prime and painted over varnished hardwood. You might be able to strip them and bring them closer to the look you want.

How about choosing a nice color and doing some magic with new hardware as an alternative if you cannot afford new cabinets?

You could base coat them with a beige color and then stain with a gel or dye stain then clear coat. Just make sure you get more info on this process and always practice on the back of a draw front or door etc..

If you have a small, out of the way cabinet door, I would strip the paint off the back side. Then you could apply a few different shades of stain to see if you could get the look you want.
