painting vinyl

Can i use a darker colour on my vinyl if i use Sherwin Williams

There are some darker colors in the SW paint line that are useable on vinyl siding. I would talk to the sales pros there to make sure.

There's a reason why you almost never see vinyl in a dark color.
It expands a lot when it gets hot, it can get so hot it starts to buckle.
It also will faid far faster painted a dark color.

One more fun fact, if you were to paint it now while it's hot there's going to be strips any place where the pieces lap.
Can vinyl siding be painted sure, will you like the look after a few seasons of it expanding and contracting, not likly.

Sherwin Williams Duration or there Super Paint will stay stuck the best.
Make sure it's clean before painting.

Joe, you mention the overlap areas expanding and exposing the old color when it gets hot. I agree that does happen but a really good painter can work magic with his paint brush and actually paint UNDER that overlap so that when it expands, the old color does not show up. Just wanted to point that out. It does take a bit of extra work to accomplish that, but it can be done.

Sherwin Williams does have vinyl safe colors and some are darker, especially when using Duration. When you paint vinyl or aluminum siding the key is to make sure the surface is cleaned well, dry and you want to paint when its hot, because that's when the siding is expanded. Painting when the siding is expanded will reduce your chances of having those marks at the joints that Joe is speaking of. We paint both vinyl and aluminum siding all of the time with no problems using Sherwin Williams products.
