painting Thompson water sealer

first id like to say hey to everyone, ive been in the construction field for almost 40 years now and well i finally talked myself into buying a airless sprayer. not a expensive one but decent one, a graco lts17. id like to know which tip to get for spraying Thomson water sealer on my patio deck.

We are not supposed to bash products on here, but, in this case I must speak up........others will too. Thompsons is the absolute worst product to put on wood........it is a waxed/silica based product that holds up for oh maybe a month or two. Then it wears off and your deck turns an ugly black color. How do I know? I have been talked into using it once or twice in my 34 years of painting and each and every time I have had the same ugly result. I will never ever use it again. If you are looking for something inexpensive consider Flood products. Just my two cents.

Hi - youre gonna have hella overspray pushin that through an airless- but if you are bound and determined then get the largest tip that'll fit in your gun and turn the pressure all the way down. here's a handy reference chart on tip sizes

good luck and dont get that stuff on glass or else wipe it off right away

I will also say no to Thompsons- never heard anything good about it. I haven't done decks for a while, but when I did I used x-100. I think there are more and better products now.
Also I dont thing a sprayer is a good way to do a deck. you want to work it in. I rolled a few boards wide and used a long bristled pad on a pole to brush it in, sometimes wet on wet to really get it soaked in but not puddling.
keep a wet edge the length of the boards and do another few- 5 or 6 at a time.

funny my wifes been using it on our redwood deck for almost 20 years and the deck looks almost as good as it did way back. by the way we live in arizona, mohave valley, where temps get to 128 degrees in the summer. by the way thats a colored stain she applied years ago. it does have some shade early morning but thats it.

That deck looks good - I like the bench tied into the handrail- I'll share my story~ 1 yr ago I treated a dock that was right next to an identical looking dock. The were both brand new, built by the same builder, same everything.

the thompsons'd one definitely is the newer looking one today. Now of course the shaded parts still get black n green mildew- and no water beads up on it anymore- But it looks like it has less checking, warping , and dead surface wood. oh, and less splinters

less splinters is good. ive had friends that say they hate thomsons but as you can see its worked for my wife.

I would never spray any sealer on a deck.
It's not going to put a thick enough layer on and your also going to be dealing with all the over spray.

Thompson's is a horrible wax based product. You are lucky to get a season out of it and the wax can haunt you trying to finish decks.

Dry Arizona is quite different than wet, hot ,cold , snow, ice, Minn.
A painted or solid stain here will not last. Anything that sits on the surface, and will peel away rather than wear away, will not last.

X-100 is also a paraffin based coating. But I think it is far superior to Thompsons. In both cases- once you start with it you will have to do a total strip to change from it. Do your do diligence for where you are.

true. different climates require different systems.

Hotrod, your deck does look awesome! Maybe I'm being too harsh about the Thompsons..........the company did get bought out by Sherwin-Williams a few years back.......now, are we talking about the clear Thompsons of the the STAIN Thompsons? The clear is what gave me fits. I would apply it and it would literally turn black with mold after a month or two. It was if something in the product was food for the mold. Anyway, I'm glad your wife has had such great success with the Thompson's. How often does she apply it?

In my years of dealing with water and wood I would never use Thompson water sealer. yuck! Stick with flood or Super deck duck back to name a few.

Thompsons has a few products that are not the Parafin Wax Based Waterproofer and that looks like one of them.
