Painting textured sheetrock around Whirlpool tub
I'm doing a bathroom remodel that started off as just crown moulding then the wife got involved. .
Anywho, the builder put a 6" high white marble surround around the whirlpool tub. the rest of the wall is some of the ultra thinned flat Monarch paint over rolled on textureing. The last time I had the three kiddos on the tub they had a great time spashing water over the backslash onto the walls. This cause the texture to stert buckling and pealing from the walls. when I pealed off the texture that was pealed, it didn't look like the builder used green sheetrock. I vinyl spackled where the tecture came off then thinned some out and rolled it to try to match it original texture.
I'd like to paint this with a paint that can stand up to some occasional splashed from the kids and not let water soak through to the textureing and drywall. I know the watered down flat paint the builder used was like a spounge for water but I still want something on the flatter side of eggshell.

No such critter
From you're description, it sounds like improper drywall to begin with and then it gets worse. If it were me( and I could not redo the sheet rock properly) I would oil prime and apply a couple coats of at least an eggshell finish from a real paint store, making sure all was completly dry between coats and after painting

Thanks J.
Which paint would you recommend? Ben Moore Bath and Kitchen? I thought BM had a Matte paint for wet areas that would be less glossy than eggshell?

Actually, Ben Moore makes Aura Bath and Spa, and it's a matte finish, which is between flat and eggshell. B/twn that and BIM as a primer/basecoat you should be watertight.

I just read someting about not being able to use BIN over Latex. Is that true. That would cause a problem with my current walls that have latex paint on them.

I've never heard that Dan. I quickly scanned the TDS for BIN and it makes mention of use over glossy painted surfaces w/out sanding, but makes no qualifications as to latex or oil. It makes no mention anywhere of not using over latex. I knew it wouldn't but just wanted to make sure.

Bin is just fine over anything u can think of. I second it's recommendation or maybe some Zinnser Coverstain Oil. You really want to try and block moisture from getting to the drywall and popping off the texture/paint. Follow with 2 coats of SemiGloss.

Would you put that on you're walls with kids splashing in the tub?
I know I would'nt. It is fine paint but IMO not good enough for this situation

Here's a thought- just around the splash area use a clear coat. If you want really flat and are oK to spend a buck to get it, use Modern Masters dead flat acrylic clear. Most other low sheens are really not that low- but it would seal the area. It will slightly darken the look also.
I've done this around sinks, particularly in laundrys.

Chrisn, if it's spec'd for steam, it should be fine for splash, as steam is harder on finishes than water in that sense, permeability. If it was a dark color, maybe not, but a light color I think would be fine. It may be a matte finish but it's a different formulation from Regal Matte. Brush's suggestion could work too. I've done the same myself when doing deep bases in baths/showers. BM has a flat clear in the super spec line, and I found that looking for Modern Masters.

Not Aura in general, but Aura Bath and Spa. I've used it a couple times, it's a nice product. It's a matte finish.
