painting a textured ceiling

I have read in several posts that you should roll in 1 direction. Does that mean if you are rolling from left to right that you remove the roller and go back and start at the left again? Why do you only roll in 1 direction?
thanks

If the texture has never been painted or sealed before, the new paint will rewet it and can cause it to peel off on your roller of you do a back and forth action on it.

That's true of acoustic spray (popcorn). If it's a spray or roll on joint compound (stipple or knockdown) it's not a problem....

I guess I had popcorn on my mind because I never look forward to painting it the first time.

You were absolutely right in mentioning the different types of texture.
