Painting stairs and railings.
I have painted our stairs before but never the railings.
The railing tops are stained right now the the ballusters are painted white. I have googled how to do it but would love any personal tips before getting this project underway. Did anything work out well or not well for you? I am going to paint the steps white, keep the ballusters white, and stain the blonde handrails an espresso color. After all is done I will install a runner. Thanks! |

Painting stairs and railings.
I have balluster rails on my porch that I paint using a 2.5" angular sash brush. I have always painted one side as complete as I can on the whole assembly, then go around and do the front, wrapping it around to the back. I'm sure a paint pro or two can give better advice on application.
My other suggestion is use an off-white, iven if it is only slight, that will blend with your top rail and room. An untinted white with a dark railing may appear too stark and perhaps less professional, IMHO. |

Painting stairs and railings.
Just like any painting over varnish- the secret is in the prep. Scuff sand really well, wipe clean and prime with a good bonding primer.
use a harder paint meant for trim, not a wall paint.

Painting stairs and railings.
Do the handrails, then the ballusters, then the stairs.
