Painting the spindles of a stair case

How do I do that? Would I sand them or use liquid deglosser or just replace? If you recommend replacement how is that done? This is a typical cookie cutter townhouse with an ugly oak stair rail. This is just the spindles.

Assuming they are intact, I would ask you first whether they bother you so much you must paint them?

If you really cannot stand them you will have to degloss them chemically or with fine grit sandpaper.

You will then need to prime them and I would use a nice solvent based alkyd. Benjamin Moore Fresh Start comes to mind. You could also use a high bond waterbased primer and underlay.

Follow either with two coats of the finish of your choice. I would use a waterbased latex acrylic product.

They make cutesy little spindle rollers but a nice 2.5 inch angled sash brush worked for me for decades.

Thank you!!! And yes... They really do bother me, much to my husbands dismay!! I'll take the info you provided when I go to purchase materials. The 2.5 angled brush will work for me. Not too much into cutesy stuff. They never seem to work for me

Do NOT go to a big box place for any information and or paint products you can trust:no:

I won't. More than likely I'll go to the sherwin Williams store in my neighborhood. Btw. What do you think of Ace Hardware? Are they considered big box stores?

Ace has some good paint products- and many carry Ben Moore.
But as far as how knowledgeable the staff is would be different store to store, or even person to person.

Is it considered a big box store? We have a new one in the neighborhood.

I think most ACE, Do it Best, and Tru Value hardware stores are still locally owned franchises but some have gotten very large and could be corporate stores. :( Where I used to live the store switched from being an ACE to DiB store but they had the Benjamin Moore, Pratt & Lambert and some designer brands. I guess they had some stuff labeled for them but I never used it. They had extremely knowlegable paint department staff and did a substantial contractor business.
