My garage door is starting to show some surface rust and I was wondering if there was an effective way to paint over it and stop the rust in its tracks. I tried doing this with an old van years ago and even though I sanded, primed and painted over the rust (rust inhibiting primer & paint) the rust still came through the paint after less than a year.
Looking for any advice on dealing with this before it really gets out of hand.
Red Oxide primer would suffice for quite a while with no more rust than you have there. It'll help keep it under control for many years. Once it gets worse, or even now if you want to go ahead with it, you can apply a product such as Ospho, which is an acid etcher that neutralizes the rust and converts it into a type of primer which you can paint right over.
