hello, I just finished building my fence built primarily of treated wood, with exception of my fence boards which are rough sawn spruce. I intend to paint the fence to protect from rotting, but with winter fast approaching where I live I am concerned I may not be able to do any painting before winter. Would I be able to get away with one full winter season without painting it until next year? Or will the rough spruce begin to rot and will I likely be replacing some boards come next spring?
While it's always preferable to coat wood ASAP, it would be better to hold off if the weather is dicey and could cause the finish to fail or not cure properly. I doubt if one winter will do that much damage, unless you live in Siberia. I would hold off, spend the winter researching solid stains, and go with a stain in the spring. Paint is not the best option for a fence.
ok great, will do. will likely go with a good protective stain and apply next spring when the weather cooperates. thanks
