Painting right after priming

Is it okay to paint right after the primer dries?

For the most part- yes. Depends on what prolbem the primer is solving though.
For stain killing- better to let it really dry- like overnight - if possible.

Follow the label recommendations. There is good stuff to know on the side of the can.

If I'm painting metal with spray cans, I just start painting as soon as the primer is no longer wet.

With a brush or roller paint job, if you start painting too soon, the water (in latex paint) or solvents (in oil based paints) can disolve the primer real quick, fast enough that some of the primer starts mixing in with the paint a little and contaminating the brush or roller as you move them over the surface, then it's best to wait a while till the primer is actually dry.
