painting q's

Anyone ever try and paint plastic shutters before?
I read you can only paint the same color again or something...
Painting aluminum downspouts and gutters?
Painting vinyl soffits...

We're looking into a new look for the house and all these things come up...
Thanks for any advice or direction.

I have used Krylon spraypaint for plastic shutters and it worked really good. Removed them first and sprayed them on sawhorses. Of course I only had a few shutters to paint. It could get quite expensive doing a whole house

Yes I have painted plastic shutters before
It doesn't work particularly well
Mostly when I get a request, it's the homeowner hoping to save some money
As I have to remove them, bring them to the shop, prep and spray a few coats, then install them, the price ends up being not much cheaper than new ones
...and there's no guarantees the finish will stay on
Those that go with it usually end up being someone who wants a special color not available in the shutters
That being said, I've used Ben Moore's MorGlo/SoftGloss and Sherwin Williams Duration with decent results

I don't usually paint the downspouts either
But when asked I used Duration with success

Both must be well cleaned before painting

Vinyl soffits, I'm not sure I've had the pleasure

i think we're going to buy new ones anyways. but that still leaves the house trim, soffits, and aluminum gutters... woohoo.. hehe

hey, where in Cape Cod are you? My parents have a house in N. Truro, I miss it out there, haven't been back in a while.

Yah it's still pretty cool out here
I'm mid-cape, but I like heading out Truro way on days off
We love that Highland Lighthouse

I've painted over all of them, the most important thing is to make sure they are etched properly for the prime coat to stick. We use 220 grit wet/dry sandpaper and do a thorough job.

Clean it well and use top quality paint like Sherwin WIlliams Super Paint, and it will look good.
