Painting Plaster or repair/replace?
Small cracks in plaster built in 1920's, a sandy texture and uneven. What do I do with the walls? Single parent so tearing all plaster out and installing drywall doesn't seem like something I want to take on. Any ideas on another alternative or just prepare wall (how?) and paint. Would like a smooth surface and possible be able to hang a picture or two. Appreciate the help!

repairing plaster
First off, what part of the country do you live in? Northern climate?

How big are these cracks.? Hairline? Big enough to put a quarter into? Bigger?

Is the plaster pulling away from the lath at or around the area of the cracks? Are the cracks on walls or ceilings or both?

You will get lots of answers on how to fix cracks in plasters and many different methods work but filling us in with more details (pun intended) will help with the answer...

I live in southern Indiana, hairline cracks, want to hang pictures and a flat screen t.v to it. Texture is like cement, rough.

Fixing the cracks
Have these cracks been filled before? ON some older homes, filling these cracks with a leight weight spackle is all you need. It just depends on how much movement there is in the walls over the course of the seasons. IN my 100 yr old house, I could get away with this... some spackle and paint survived many years.

However, if there is a lot of movement, those cracks will open back up. YOu could try a caulk, especially since they are hairline. Rolling paint on the wall may be enough to hide the hairline cracks.

Other solutions are to use drywall tape and a plaster patching compound.

If cracking is still too hard to contain, there are more aggressive solutions which can renew your wall without ripping it down. These solutions use a fine fiberglass like material to cover the wall for repainting.
