Painting Pine Bookcase's

I just got two pine, unfinished bookcase's. I want to paint them an off white color to match a mantel in our living rool.

What materianl's should I use for these to come out the best?

I would assume a primer and then paint?

What tools will work best for this and what type of paint and primer will be best to use?

You should use a quality primer recommended by the provider of your paint. For paint, I've used ProClassic Waterbourne from SW, and others user Waterbourne Impervo from BM. Ordinary paint will stick to your books.

Warning: The waterbourne enamels go on differently from regular paint, so practice on some scrap before your final project.

If it's clear wood (no knots), you can use latex primer
If it's got knots, you'll need oil-based
Just let them know at the paint shop

As far as tools go:

A quality nylon brush should do fine. One thing to remember (with ProClassic anyway) is work fast and don't "re-brush"! If you missed a spot, wait for it to dry and hit it on the next coast. If you go back to a spot you have already painted, you'll dig brush marks in the coat. The "working time" for the enamel isn't that long.

Also, let it cure for a few days before piling books on. That will lessen the chance your books will stick to the shelf.

A nice quality (paint store-not big box) Purdy Sash Brush (angle brush) would be helpful
Probably a 2.5" if you feel comfortable with it
If not, a 2" would be fine
You can wave them about in the store...they don't mind
