Painting pine

Hello. I am working on my first real DIY project, making a simple bedframe. I have sanded my pine boards, but notice that there are some holes from the knots in the wood. Can I fill this with spackle or do I have to use something special? I am NOT staining the wood. Only painting. Thanks for your advice!!

Spackle is fine. I think its better to prime the wood first, then fill the holes. Spot priming the patches after helps also.
