Painting Picnic Tables

HI,
I have a new pine picnic table and I want to paint a design on the top. I would like to leave the background of the design natural wood so I do not want to paint a solid colored primer over the tabletop. What can I use to prime the top and what type of paint should I use to paint my design with? The tabletop is not made of pressure treated lumber.
Thanks for your help!
