Painting Paneling

I'm considering painting some early 80's paneling in my family room. It's not real wood but some sort of composite that looks like real wood. Was thinking of just wiping it down to get the dust off and then using Zinseer 123 as a primer followed by latex paint. Others have told me they had success doing it this way.
Was wondering if anyone has some experience doing this and any tips that may be helpful. Thanks

Painting Paneling

That would be fine if there was never any wax applied to the paneling
