painting over a wood stain

I have a coffee table that is finished with a poly coat, so it is natural. I want to change it to a cherry finish to match my other table in that room, is there a paint that I can buy to paint over it so it will look like a darker wood finish and if not what are the steps I need to refinish it, I do understand that refinishing it is allot of work, unless there is something to take the poly coat off. help please

I'd strip and refinish, very common for furniture.

No, not really
Strip it, or take it to a local stripper (...a furniture stripper)
Then re-finish it with the proper stain

:thumbsup:I agree , a chemical stripper is needed. Then stain it the color you want. May require several coats. After staining use several coats of poly. You have to decide on the shine you want. I suggest you go to Minwax web Site for stain colors, etc.

I just finished my dinning room table. Looks great.
