painting over wallpaper

I have wallpaper that has been on the walls for about 30 years so i cannot really remove it because it is taking the wood from behind it. Apparently, this is how they put wallpaper up, it's an older house, however, the paper is stained in places and old. I want to paint it and need some ideas, i understand there will be imperfections, but i need some ideas on the best colors to use to hide them as well as some type of texture.

Have you tried using DIF wallpaper remover? I had a similar problem with multiple layers of old wallpaper. After I scored the heck out of it, (using a scoring tool called the Paper Tiger) applied the DIF with a brush and let it sit for 15 minutes or so, the stuff literally fell of the wall, all I had to do was catch it. If you do this , make sure to let it soak in. I would not recommend painting over the wallpaper, it just doesn't ever look all that good IMO.

It's never a good idea to paint over wallpaper
Try the DIF and Paper Tiger

If it really won't come off and you have no choice, prime with a solvent-based primer before painting

Then you can fill in any cracks with joint compound and some putty/taping knives

Sand smooth and re-prime the repair spots (you can use latex primer for that if you want)

Then use a good quality light colored flat paint (two coats)

We painted over wall paper in a County Court house.
The thing we watched was the edges peeling open when the paint was applied. So make sure any edges are not loose or the paint will open it more. Also we got bubbles in the wall paper after it was wet from the paint. The best way to handle that is not to touch it or try to repair it. After the paint dried the bubbles would tend to dry out and to shrink back to the wall.

That's why you need to use a solvent based primer
Latex primer (or latex paint directly to the covering) can loosen the covering from the wall
