Painting over varnish
Is there a way to paint over varnish without having to sand the piece of furniture?

Getting good adhesion is the most important part of paint over varnish. Dulling the varnish by sanding, and then using a GOOD bonding primer is more important than the finish coat . With out a good foundation, the paint will fail.
