Painting over semi-gloss

I have old walls in my house that have been painted with paint containing lead by the previous owners. When we moved in we had the walls repainted but the workmen accidentally painted a semi-gloss over the primer. Because of the lead I cannot scrape the walls and repaint without making a lead dust cloud. Any suggestions to repaint the walls?

When was the house painted with the supposed lead paint? It has been banned since the 70's

Anyway, prime with Zinnsers Cover Stain, or Bullseye 123 first.

You should be able to scruff up the semi-gloss a bit with fine grit paper without hurting anything with lead under that layer. You want some tooth to the semi-gloss to improve adhesion although a bonding primer should do the trick.

That was my first thought. If the most recent coat of paint contains lead, it has been a LONG time since any work has been done in that house!

Use a lead test kit available at your local paint store. Swab the surface if it's red then you have lead. Like the other posts I would find it hard to believe that you would have paint with lead in it. It would be really old.

If you discover there's no lead make sure the surface is clean, dull and dry then paint.
