Painting over oil stained wood?

I have a work bench I am going to paint and there are areas where oil has stained the wood. I am going to clean it with a degreaser as best I can and use an oil based Zinsser Cover stain primer. Has anyone had any experience with painting over oil stains like this?

Yea, I would really clean it the best you can. Even cover stain won't always work on something like that. Even though its oil primer, I've seen it do weird stuff over oil spots like that.
Might put BIN on top of the cover stain if it bleeds through.

Thanks for the response. I plan on trying Simply Green and another degreaser I have. I hope I can get the paint to look half way decent.

Painting over oil stained wood?

Since it's a work bench instead of painting and fighting the stains, you might want to consider putting like a sheet of formica on the top. It makes a great work surface as it slick and easy to clean, most spills just wipe off. And if you put it on the right way if it gets damaged or old it easy to replace. After you buy paint and primer the cost would probably be comparable.

It's the base leg and cross brace that have the oil problems, had an oil can spill and didn't notice it for a while. The bench has a lot of sentimental value, so I want to keep it. I am finishing up a big makeover on my garage and I just want it to look a little better. I am painting it the same gray that I used on the trim in the garage. I have some tiles that I will be using for the top.
