My husband and I are remodeling our bathroom in a house built in the 1970s. Today I pulled off tile. However, it was applied to sheetrock and when I pulled it off It pulled off the top layer of sheet rock. There were also about 3 layers of wallpaper. Problem is this....Now the wall is all bumpy and uneven. I tried to sand it but that didnt work on the sheet rock and wallpaper. What should I do? I dont want my paint job to look uneven.
The over-rocking would work
Otherwise, it needs to be sealed
Use a specialty sealer such as Zinsser's Gardz
After sealing, you could "smooth out" the problem areas with joint compound and taping/putty knives
You may find a layer of joint compound over the whole thing (a skim coat) is required
As it sounds like a bit of a mess, trying to fill in the spots that need it may get you pretty much a skim coat anyway by the time you are done
The j/c must then be sanded smooth, dusted, and then primed with a quality latex primer, or Gardz if you have some left over
