painting over exterior gloss & satin when sanding is difficult
I have some old exterior decorative moulding that needs to be repainted. One kind of moulding has been painted in satin latex, and another in gloss latex. Some of the paint is flaking off. I don't care what finish I paint it in and I can keep the same colors, but unfortunately it would be impossible to sand thoroughly. It is very detailed with lots of nooks and crannies.
What are my options? I have read some info on the internet and everything seems to mention sanding. Whatever I do, I would prefer it would last as long as possible.
you should power wash it to remove all contaminants that may affect the adhesion of the new paint coating
I like to use Sherwin-Williams Prep-Rite Bonding Primer for glossy surfaces that I can not or do not want to sand. the Bonding Primer will stick to smooth glossy surfaces.
there are cleaners you can use that will de-gloss but the bonding primer is the easiest solution to your problem
