Painting over existing finished trim/railing?

Currently all the baseboard trim, window trim, stair trim, and railings in my upstairs are the cheap oak look with a shiny clear finish to them. I just finished the basement with all painted white trim and doors.

Can I just prime/paint white over all the upstairs trim/railings? Does it need to be sanded down first? I would like to do it without removing if possible.

Thanks. I really dont want to replace all the trim/railings......

I would sand all trim with 220 then prime with an oil base primer. Then lightly sand, dust and finish coat with either oil or latex. This is one of the professional systems. Good luck

Just to add, if you are going to do it right as posted, please. please go to a real paint store and buy some quality paint and primer. You are investing a lot of time and $ here and you might as well do it properly.

And are you sure it is a cheap oak look and not real oak. I spend a good portion of my time taking paint off of hardwood.
