Painting over dark wood doors

We have several interior doors that are solid wood. The previous owners had stained them cherry. We want to paint them white.

I sanded the clearcoat/sealer/whatever off one door, applied 2 layers of Kilz primer and 3 layers Behr satin, but it looks streaky (dark wood is showing through) and poorly done.

Do you usually use semi-gloss for doors? I'm afraid I will have a shiny door and I do not want that effect. Any suggestions for success are welcome.

I think what you have done should have been good. I don't know if you used the "low odor" kilz, but I have better luck with the oil based original. I like semi gloss for doors so they can be wiped off, but you should be able to apply a satin finish with no problems.
