painting over a brick fireplace

Hi, I have a very dated looking brick fireplace in my living room. The colors are yellowish and the grout is not the same color in all places. I want to paint it a cream color to all be the same...bricks and grout. This will brighten up the room. Does anyone have any tips on how to do this correctly. I believe I need to primer it, but don't know if some products are better than others and if I need a special kind of paint or just ordinary wall paint. Help!
