Painting over black semi gloss ?

Hi ric I did this this morning but I guess it didn't post. I will make this my last post on this issue so you get the final word. I'm not going to change your mind and your not going to change mine. Maybe we can move on to something we can agree on. Now you guys keep talking about a complete paint failure and I could buy that if I just said paint over it. But what we are talking about is a complete primer failure and in all the years I have been painting I have never heard of or experienced that happening. Not trying to be a smart a$$ but if you don't have the confidence that your primer will stick to paint maybe you should consider trying another brand. As for Michelle if she comes back my advice is print out a couple of these debate posts, and trot on down to a PAINT store not a big box store and let them advise her.

Ok, we'll have to leave this discussion with "we'll just have to agree to only kind of agree"...As I mentioned earlier, I don't really disagree with anything you've said. Part of the reason for our debate is that I typically present things more from a manufacturers perspective (although I'm not a manufacturer)...Nor am I a painter, so I don't have any brand that I have, or don't have, confidence in. I work with a few companies to evaluate many competitor's products, plus I also kinda serve in the role of conflict resolution inasmuch as my role is to determine a definitive cause of a paint problem - OR - the definitive cause of what the problem isn't. So I see many, many jobs that have failed miserably - jobs that shouldn't have failed. Unfortunately, so many times the failure (complete or partial) is due to incomplete surface prep. The most common and difficult response to my findings of "applicator error" is, inevitably, "...I've been doing things this way for XX years and never had a problem before...".

I just try to eliminate, or minimize, as many of those "flukey" or seemingly minor issues that usually don't, but could have major consequences if ignored. We really don't disagree that much, and I appreciate your take on this matter. Personally, I think a healthy, well thought out and presented debate/discussion on all such issues can only benefit those representing both (all) sides of this god-forsaken industry.

Painting over black semi gloss ?

So I went to sherwin williams and bought the super paint and primer in one interior acrylic latex satin in a light purple and yellow I also bought gloss off prepaintsurface preparation the directions say to saturatet a lint free cloth and apply in a circular momotion this is used in stead of sanding but removes the gloss then they told me I can use two coats of the paint I bought cause it is a paint and primer in one !do you think this will work just as good as sanding it sounds so easy compared.to sanding, then putting two coats of primer then painting ! I just wanted your advise and opinion on this ! Thanks so much michelle

I would sand and not chemically degloss it. I know it sounds like lots of work but it will go fast with a sanding pole. Do try a small corner to see if the deglosser is going to work.

I hate to hear SW has jumped on the paint and primer in one marketing bandwagon. No such thing.

As recommended, especially because you are starting with a dark, gloss, surface, apply one coat of bonding primer (two serves no real purpose) and then two coats of the paint.

Sdsester is correct.........sanding is actually faster and easier than using a deglosser. You can use a sanding sponge, a pole sander, a sanding block, or really just about any means that is comfortable for you. I like the round pole sanders. You put the sander on the end of an extension pole and move in an up-and-down, side-to-side motion. A room would take no more than 15-20 minutes for a beginner. I usually can sand a small room in 5-10 minutes.

Am i wrong, I deal quite a bit with SW and i have never heard super paint pushed as all in one. I thought Emerald was their all in one. Either way I have used all in one a few times at cust. request and have never been happy with results.

Toolseeker, you are not wrong........SuperPaint is self-priming.......not all-in-one......that's a huge difference.

I wish you had said how that worked out for you. The reason a lot of us don't go to the depot for paint is well the quality, but also the guy you ask for help with your paint problem might have been in gardening 2 days ago. I know a lot of people get lucky but if I have a paint question or problem I want someone whose business is paint and they have been doing it for years.

This is a free advice forum. No one is obligated to give you a response or advice. If you want a definite answer, go to your local paint store.
