Painting Old / New Metal Siding

Does anyone have experience with Painting Metal Siding?

I have some Old and some New siding on my House. The Old needs to be painted but I am afraid that the New won't hold the Paint.

Do you mean aluminum or steel siding?
Is any of this, unpainted as in there's not even any primer on it?

The siding is steel. I removed and rehung most of the House. Some of it is New and some of it is so old the paint has come off of it. I have power washed the house to remove the loose paint. My concern is the slick finish on the New siding. Any words of wisdom? What paint and or Primer?

Steel and aluminum can be painted with the same process. The only problem with steel is if you have rust......then you need to sand the rust off, prime with a rusty metal primer and you're ready for finish coats. Make sure you properly clean the siding.........gentle pressure washing or cleaning with a soft bristle brush is preferred. The last steel sided house I did was fairly easy.........some of the paint was coming off but there was no rust. I simply pressure washed and applied two coats of SW SuperPaint Satin LATEX....I know that sounds wrong....but as long as there is no rust the latex is fine. The house was done 8 years ago and still looks great.

Another option if you feel more comfortable with oil-based paint on steel is to prime with a "direct to metal" primer and paint with a "direct to metal" paint. You won't have to prime all of the siding.......spot priming the bare spots is sufficient. Good luck.

I've had the best luck with spray paint to be honest. As long as you get it on there thick and even, it's a lot easier than dealing with the strokes of a brush.

Metal, you certainly can spray steel with great success. It might be tough for a beginner who has to worry about overspray, masking windows and doors, & mastering the technique of using a spray gun. Brushing works fine and you can speed it up with a roller as well. Frank, before you spray, just make sure your homeowner's policy covers you in the event of overspray getting on a neighbor's car, house, or dog, lol. It's amazing how far paint can travel even on a mildly windy day.
