painting a newly made wooden bench

My husband is making me a wooden bench and I want to place it in my kitchen and paint it barn red. What do I have to use for paint? I live in the country and I want it to look country looking. What is your best thoughts on this? I asked a antique store but they wouldn't tell me what their secret is in painting. Please let me know. I would love to hear from you. Thank you
