Painting a new steel exterior door

Recently I painted a new exterior door , the door had a matte finish, which I assumed was a primer. I applied one coat of a semi gloss exterior latex to see if we liked the colour we had chosen.

A couple of days later I noticed a few spots where the new paint was missing.

Any thoughts where I went wrong ?

Did you degrease it first? Any place there was hand prints or oils from manufacturing are not going to stick.
Did you paint it the required two coats on all sides not just the face and two sides.
You did use an acrilic latex paint right? The type of paint to use should have been written right on the stick on the door.
Also you did not paint it a really dark color if this door gets direct sun did you?
That info should have also been right on the sticker.

I have never trusted factory primers on things like new steel doors and always put a nice coat of something I trusted on them first. Not much you can do now though but add another finish coat. Two coats of finish is the industry standard you will hear some of us preach. The first coat might cover color wise but you can only build up the needed paint film thickness with a second coat. There is no such thing as one coat coverage or primer and paint in the same can.

You are using real paint store and not some crappy box store paint right?
