Painting My Fireplace

I want to paint my fireplace White & get rid of the wood look. What steps do I have to take to get good results? Do I have to sand, primer then paint?

From here it looks to have some sort of clear coat (polyurethane) on it
If it does, and you know it's a water-based "poly", then a light scuff sand, dusting, and acrylic (latex) primer are called for, then some nice quality paint like a waterborne enamel or a hard drying eco-friendly satin or semi-gloss trim paint

If it's just stain, or the clear coat is a known oil-based poly, or "unknown" type, then a light scuff sand and dust, and a solvent (oil/alkyd) based primer are called for
After that you can top coat with your choice of product (oil/alkyd, waterborne, latex, acrylic...anything can go over oil primer)

The safe bet is to oil prime if there's any question as to what's on there now
Top coating is wide open after oil prime
