Painting the metal garage door

Hi Eveyone,

I am a newbie in painting and has decided to DIY jobs at home.

I would like to paint the metal garage door at home.

I have a couple of questions before I start. I will appreciate if some one can answer them:

1) The garage door is getting rust at the bottom, what should I do about that

2) The garage door is painted brown right now and we want white paint, should I remove the brown paint and then apply the new paint. If yes, how I can remove the old paint.

If you can advise the steps for this job.

Sand/grind the rust off, wash the door with a solution of TSP and water per directions, apply a primer for metal, such as Sherwin Williams Procryl, apply 2 coats of an acrylic DTM(direct to metal paint)

Thanks for your suggestions.

I have started the project. Did sanding/priming in this morning and hopefully will do the paint tomorrow.
