Susan,

It's OK to be thorough in your fact finding on your project. Eventually all of the pieces of the puzzle fit together.

If you removed any loose paint or loose texture from your ceiling, vacuumed it off and wiped with a damp sponge, the new texture will adhere with no problems. If you dug into the Sheetrock and exposed the brown paper core, you need to seal it with an oil primer before you texture.

You don't need to prime or paint the new texture. The majority of new home construction, at least in my area, apply the texture as a finish coat to the ceiling and let it go at that.

You can paint it if you desire, just make sure you use a quality paint, as opposed to the labeled discount ceiling paint.
