Painting Kitchen Cabinets

Well the cabinets I have right now are pretty ugly. So I want to paint them. They are wood with a coat of red paint. Should I completely sand each door down to the wood, then prime, then paint?

Advice on what primer and what paint would be helpful

I'm also thinking of a light brown color possibly to go with the floor color.
